Take Your Trailer Camping – Destination Trends for 2019

In 2019, camping is more popular than ever. With everyone, from single millennials and young families to Baby Boomers enjoying their retirement, driving from one breathtaking site to another. While classic camping destinations are perennial favorites, there are some growing trends in camping locations and types of accommodations. Formula Trailers, maker of both utility trailers and enclosed cargo trailers, takes a look at some of those trends to help you plan your next camping vacation.

Winter camping
While summer is the high season for camping, many more people are discovering the joys of camping in the winter. Southern Arizona is particularly popular, including destinations like Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. There you can find unusual cactus shapes and formations, and visitors say it’s a great spot for bird watching, too. And, while Death Valley National Park in California has scorching summer weather, in winter the temperatures settle in the 60s. Prefer the cold? Head for Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon or Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan. But, remember to bring your skis, snowmobiles, and other winter sports gear for fun in the snow and fantastic scenery.

Resort campgrounds
Plenty of people still enjoy roughing it in the great outdoors. But more and more, campers—especially those with children in tow—are looking for campsite resorts. At these spots, people can pull up their packed cargo trailers into the campground, then check out amenities such as resort-style pools, deluxe cabins, upgraded playgrounds, golf courses, premium tent sites, and a wide range of activities planned for kids, adults, and families. Many even offer organized excursions to nearby natural sites. From Nashville to Florida, Michigan to Mount Rushmore, resort campgrounds are a growing trend.

Luxury camping
Luxury camping, also known as ‘glamping,’ took off a few years ago—and its popularity has not abated. In fact, the only change is the type of destinations and accommodations. The more unusual, the better, with treehouse camping and luxurious yurts springing up everywhere. There are also more year-round campgrounds, now with cabins and hotels, as well as more traditional campsites. These destinations offer the perfect blend of proximity to nature with all the comforts—and more—of home.

Unique experiences
Collecting experiences, not things, is the mantra of many of today’s campers. So, it’s not a surprise that destinations that offer a unique experience are trending in the camping world. Many people are heading to Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina to catch a glimpse of the wild horses that run—and swim—through Shackleford Banks. Baseball lovers are heading to Phoenix in the spring, where they can camp nearby the ballparks where the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, and other teams play in spring training. And, the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley are already popular camping and travel destinations. But this August, they will be especially hot due to two 50th anniversary concerts in Woodstock, New York. If you plan to attend, book your campsite now.
